KEEP IT CO₂OL – Tech to the rescue?
Special exhibition, 28 August 2025 – 28 February 2027

‘I’m not allowed to fly any more! I should give up my car! And I can’t eat meat anymore either?’ – Actually, climate protection is not about doing without, but about swapping old habits for new possibilities.

Scientists at ETH Zurich are conducting research into technologies that will help us make a good life possible for everyone – even in the future. These include solar fuel for flying, renewable energy for driving cars or meat from cell culture instead of factory farming.

Our new exhibition ‘KEEP IT CO₂OL – Tech to the rescue?’ shows where we stand – and what we stand to gain. It brings research, politics, business and society into dialogue. Because reducing CO₂ does not mean living less – it means working together to maintain a better quality of life for everyone.

The future is created when technological progress and social change come together.

What is the exhibition about and how is it structured? Find out more

Everything about CO₂, weather and climate, the greenhouse effect and the role of CO₂ in our lives. Find out more

1 | 9

Carbon dioxide (CO₂) plays a central role in our lives. But what exactly is it? Find out more

2 | 9

The temperature on Earth depends on many factors. How to distinguish between weather and climate? Find out more

3 | 9

Earth’s brightness has a significant influence on its temperature and climate. Find out more

4 | 9

The number of processes that produce greenhouse gases is nearly endless. Find out more

5 | 9

Carbon dioxide (CO₂) plays an important role in one of life’s most important processes: photosynthesis. Find out more

6 | 9

The greenhouse effect and its influence on Earth’s temperature. Find out more

7 | 9

Carbon (C) is found everywhere on Earth: in humans, animals, plants, rocks, in the atmosphere, on land, and in the water. Find out more

How the CO₂ content in the atmosphere has changed throughout Earth’s history. Find out more

9 | 9

How nature is becoming unbalanced and how our health depends on it. Find out more

1 | 6

Becoming sedentary marks a turning point in humanity’s relationship with nature: we are increasingly distancing ourselves from nature and causing ever greater changes to Earth’s systems. Find out more

2 | 6

Earth is a unique, living planet that sustains and nourishes us. But its ability to do so has its limits. Find out more

3 | 6

The resilience of Earth’s systems can be described using planetary boundaries and tipping points. Find out more

In the last ca. 200 years, there have been many milestones for the climate and the environment. Find out more

5 | 6

Since the late 1970s, oil and gas companies have viewed scientific reports on human-caused climate change as a threat to their business. Find out more

6 | 6

Solutions from the fields of society, economics, technology and in harmony with nature. Find out more

1 | 5

In order to consistently reduce CO₂ emissions, changes are also needed in our consumption patterns, construction, mobility and the economy. Find out more
